The 2022 World Electrical Engineering Technology and Development Forum held in Wuhan

The 2022 (1st) World Electrical Engineering Technology and Development Forum (WEETDF 2022), hosted by China Electrotechnical Society (CES) with approval of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), co-supported by IEEE and IET, and co-sponsored by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and China Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute, was held in a hybrid manner in Wuhan, Hubei Province on 23-25 September 2022. With the theme of "Gathering Talents in Electrical Engineering, Joint towards A Green Future",  this forum attracted over 52,000 attendees from home and abroad.

At the opening ceremony on 24 September, Prof Qingxin Yang, President of CES and General Chair of the Forum, and Prof Jinyu Wen, Dean of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of HUST and the Executive Chair of the Forum, delivered speeches on behalf of the organizers. Mr. Hua Ning, Chief Representative of IEEE China, and Mr. Paulo Lopes, the China Country Head and Director of IET sent video congratulations. Secretary General of CES and Forum Organization Chair, Yi Han, presided over the ceremony.

The keynote section invited world-reputed experts in the field of electrical engineering at home and abroad, with speakers including Prof Shijie Cheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Baoying Wu, Secretary of Party Committee and President of CSG Electric Power Research Institute, Prof Babak Fahimi from the University of Texas at Dallas, Zhongming Du, Secretary of Party Committee and President of China Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute, Prof Nikos Hatzigyriou from the National Technical University of Athens, and Prof Jianzhong Wu, President of CES UK Section and Dean of the School of Engineering at Cardiff University. They gave keynote reports on topics related to future power systems, high-voltage direct current engineering management technology, motor drive technology, new power system construction, microgrid technology, the role of electrification in achieving carbon neutrality, and power electronics technology, sharing their academic and engineering achievements.

On 25 September, two high-end Round Table Meetings were held synchronously online and offline. The meetings, conducted in a dialogue format, invited experts, including Prof Dianguo Xu, Vice-President of CES and former Vice President of Harbin Institute of Technology, Prof Yilu Liu, Academician of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Haresh Kamath, Senior Program Manager at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in the US, and Prof Liangzhong Yao, Foreign Academician of the Academia Europaea and Dean of the Smart Grid Research Institute at Wuhan University, to discuss and exchange views on “New Power System” and “Efficient Electric Drive and Control”.

The WEETDF is a high-end international conference in the field of electrical engineering established this year by CES with approval from CAST. The forum aims to enhance the development of electrical engineering technology and energy engineering equipment in China, and to promote the manufacturing level towards high-end, intelligent and green, to meet the major strategic needs of achieving carbon peaking and neutrality. The forum seeks to consolidate global wisdom and achievements, and provide scientifical support for The Action Plan to Expedite the Green and Low-Carbon Development of Electrical Equipment, issued by five National Ministries and Commissions in August 2022. As the first WEETDF, this forum received significant attention and enthusiastic participation from experts and scholars in the field of electrical engineering, both domestically and internationally. Future WEETDF will be held annually.
